Final Reflection on EDU 654
- Three learnings from the course:
- The importance of knowing your audiences and their learning needs
- How to create an effective splash page
- Proper storyboard layout
- Integrating the 3 new ideas into courses I facilitate:
I have already started to integrate these ideas. As we learned about them, I evaluated my courses to make sure I was implementing best practices in online design.

- Audience- I created a mid-term survey in one of my courses to determine if my students preferred the way I redesigned the flow of my modules or if they preferred the original layout. The redesign was based on the micro-learning framework. I also added a short video explaining the structure changes, so students are aware of how to move through the new design. The survey provided me with a wealth of information beyond the design so I could continue to create instruction that meets my audiences' learning needs.
- Splash Page- I am working on making sure my splash page is more user-friendly and clear. I think adding clearer directions as to how to maneuver through the courses will help as well as make the page visually pleasing.
- Storyboard- I have done storyboarding before, but this course allowed me the opportunity to work with someone else in creating the board. Before I had created them for myself, so limited explanations were needed. However, when you create on with someone else and for an instructor, more details are needed. I know that professional instructional designers use storyboarding as a way to show clients the flow of the training/course, and I needed to learn how to create a fully detailed one.

Amy,
ReplyDeleteThroughout this course you have always gave some great insight. You can see your passion for your job! In your blog you mentioned that one of the things that you learned was knowing the importance of your audience. I also put that. Throughout this course we were pushed to ask questions and get to know our learners because it allows for successful learning. You said in your Personal Professional Development Plan that you plan to attend conferences. I love that idea and will be adding that to my plan. It has been great working with you throughout this semester and I wish you the best.

Amy,
ReplyDeleteI want to say that it was fun to learn with you on our shared project. Often I get so stuck in my silo that I forget that I need to explain myself better. As I mentioned in my reflection, I have already found online learning communities to be very helpful. I have found people to provide me with good ideas. There are a few people that I have reached out to with very specific questions. Basically it has been VERY helpful. I hope you have a great end to the semester and I will see you around campus!
Shaun
Amy,
ReplyDeleteFor the entirity of this course you have produced exceptional work that gave me a benchmark to admire. You mentioned the benefits of storyboarding and how EDU 654 helped you to develop that skill. Storyboarding requires you provide a level of detail that can bring a course to life even before it is built into an LMS. Like you I realized having a partner caused me provide extended detail in the description of the course flow. Thanks to you and Shaun for sharing an great course.
Good luck with your instructional design future.
Pamela
Amy, isn't it funny how everything winnows down to audience?Understand who is being trained really guides every other aspect of design.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you are enjoying training mag network - free webinar training is always a good idea!
Storyboarding was also one of my main takeaways. I typically would just build classes but now know the importance of having a plan before you jump in.
ReplyDeleteI also found storyboarding and audience to be two of my major takeaways. However, I totally agree with your third pick of splash page. I learned so much about the power of that introductory page for grabbing and engaging the learning community at the very beginning. Each group project had such a wonderful spin on the layout of their splash page. I felt like I was able to add quite a few kibbles to my creativity bag. Thanks for all of your valuable input!
ReplyDeleteAmy,
ReplyDeleteA detailed storyboard is something to behold. I have to tell you, going through the EdTPA process in undergrad, really showed me the importance of it. Each storyboard I create, I refer back to my EdTPA template for guidance. It reminds me to include my audience, my objectives, my tools, my learning outcomes, introduction, scaffolding activities, and assessments. After I have a rough outline, I add all of my links and any notes I need to remember. Before I know it, it is detailed to the max. Alicia and I put ours on a Google Doc and shared all of our links and ideas, then just picked the tools we thought best fit. Excellent goal to strive for. Have a wonderful summer.
